You've been circling the same question for months. It's really two questions.

The job, the degree, the business you keep almost fixing. Each quarter brings a new reason it's about to turn, and you still can't tell whether you're giving up too soon or holding on too long. When someone asks, you hear yourself say the same sentence again: "I've put too much into this to walk away now." It feels like grit. It feels like the mature thing to say.

Here's what that sentence hides. The time, money and effort you've already spent are gone whether you stay or leave, so they should play no part in a decision about the future. Yet the research on sunk cost shows that having invested makes people more inclined to keep going, and even bends their reading of the facts. Add identity, the way "I do this" quietly becomes "I am this", and staying feels like wisdom when it's only momentum. Meanwhile the real cost of waiting stays out of sight: the opportunities you can't take, the career you're not building elsewhere.

The Quit Primer separates the question into the two it's made of: is this actually fixable, and is the cost of staying compounding while you wait? Answer each on its own terms and the verdict usually stops hiding. The guide won't push you to leave. It helps you choose on the future, not the past, so whichever way you go, you go on purpose.

What's inside

  • Where this starts. Nathan, six years into a company that was neither failing nor succeeding, and the sentence that was the symptom, not the argument.
  • Two questions wearing one coat. The small table of four outcomes that appears once you ask "is it fixable?" and "is the cost compounding?" separately.
  • The sunk cost. What Arkes and Blumer's experiments found, including a theater subscription, and the one-minute new-arrival test.
  • Identity. How "I do this" fuses with "I am this", and what the grit research does and doesn't support.
  • The compounding test. The opportunity cost people routinely overlook, and three steps: name the meter, ask whether it compounds, set it against the fix.
  • A quitting urge or a hard patch? Four honest questions, from phase or structure to spike or steady signal.
  • The deadline that decides for you. Turning a vague stay into a dated experiment, and the one caution that keeps it honest.
  • After the verdict. Leaving well and staying well, and why the dip after a correct quit is not evidence you were wrong.
  • Where the method stops. When a decision also deserves an advisor or a couples therapist, and when it is a safety problem rather than a decision at all.

Who this is for

  • Anyone circling a quit-or-stay question for months: a job, a degree, a venture, a long project, a relationship gone quiet.
  • People who keep saying "I've put too much into this to walk away" and want to know if that's a reason or a symptom.
  • Anyone who wants a method rather than a pep talk.

Who this is not for

  • If you feel unsafe, controlled or harmed in the situation you're deciding whether to leave, this is not a decision-framework problem. It's a safety problem, and the guide's Resources section points to where to start.
  • If you want someone to make the choice for you. The guide won't: the choice depends on facts only you hold.

Grounded in the research

The guide draws on published research, listed in its Sources section: Hal Arkes and Catherine Blumer's foundational paper on the sunk cost effect, Shane Frederick and colleagues on opportunity cost neglect, Angela Duckworth and colleagues on grit, and a meta-analysis by Marcus Credé and colleagues, pooling 88 samples, that found grit only moderately related to performance. Where the guide offers its own editorial view, it says so.

FAQ

Is this guide going to tell me to quit?
No. Its goal is to make the choice yours. If the method points to stay, it shows how to stay all the way: commit to the fix you named and set the next review date.

Isn't quitting just a failure of grit?
The guide takes perseverance seriously. But knowing when to stop isn't the opposite of grit. It's the other half of the same skill.

What if I can't tell whether it's just a hard patch?
Then that's the answer for now: set a deadline and gather the data rather than flip a coin. The guide shows how to make that deadline one you'll actually honor.

Does it cover relationships?
Yes, and it's clear about its limits: a decision about a marriage or family, especially with children involved, deserves a couples therapist or counselor before any irreversible step.

How does the charge appear on my statement?
The charge appears as PRIMERDECK. Discreet, no product name.

Do you stand behind every guide?
Yes. Email info@primerdeck.com. We read every reply and we'll make it right.

Nathan's "three more months" had run twenty-four times. Pull the two questions apart, set the past at zero where it belongs, and the verdict you've been unable to find usually turns out to have been waiting, plainly, in a very small table.
