Everyone else can see it. That's the whole problem.

You caught yourself doing the exact thing you swore you had stopped doing. A friend went quiet at something you said, or the same note surfaced in a third performance review, and for one uncomfortable second you glimpsed how you might look from the outside. Then the explanation arrived, smooth and convincing, and the glimpse closed.

That reflex has a price: the pattern that follows you from job to job, the argument that repeats across relationships, the feedback you keep filing under "they don't get me." In Tasha Eurich's research across roughly 5,000 participants, only 10 to 15% of people who believe they're self-aware actually are. And it gets worse: the smartest, most introspective people are often the least self-aware, because intelligence builds better justifications, not better mirrors.

Here is the useful part: self-blindness is not a character flaw. It is the architecture of any system trying to observe itself from inside itself, and architecture can be mapped. The Blindspot Field Manual gives you that map: the fourteen most common blindspot patterns in adult life, the five layers where they hide, and the five external disciplines that, in research and clinical practice, actually move the needle. Not more introspection. Introspection is the tool that got you here.

What's inside

  • Why intelligence makes it worse. The five compounding reasons: narrative continuity bias, the justification reflex, the recursion problem, the default-mode lock, and the intelligence trap.
  • The five layers of self-blindness. What you do, how you feel about it, why you do it, how others experience it, and how it fits a pattern, so you can locate a blindspot instead of merely suspecting one.
  • The 14 named blindspot patterns. Each with what it sounds like from the inside, why it survives, and the practical move that shifts it. You'll recognise most instantly, in someone else. That's the point.
  • The five mirror techniques. The 90-day behaviour log, the five witnesses, the recording, the friend test, and the slow update: external instruments for a job introspection cannot do alone.
  • Why "just be more self-aware" fails as advice. And what works instead.
  • When the blindspot is in someone else's life. How to use the framework without weaponising it.
  • The hard cases. Five domains where blindspots quietly compound: career, parenting, money, friendship, health. Plus the recursive blindspot: the part of you already assembling clever reasons this doesn't apply.

Who this is for

  • People who suspect they're missing something about themselves and can't name what.
  • High performers, managers, founders, clinicians: people who notice the gap between their effectiveness with others and their visibility into themselves.
  • Anyone who has watched a pattern repeat in their own life and heard themselves explain it away, again.
  • Readers of The Manipulation Primer who want the inward-facing companion guide.

Who this is not for

  • If you want a quick personality quiz that tells you who you are, this isn't it. The guide is honest that no quiz can do that.
  • If you're in active crisis, depression, persistent dysregulation, or trauma response, please work with a qualified clinician. A field manual cannot replace that.
  • If you want a tool for diagnosing other people. The framework does its best work turned inward.

What you get

  • Instant PDF download (works on phone, tablet, desktop, Kindle)
  • About 21 minutes, a focused read
  • The 14-pattern reference card (printable one-pager)
  • The 90-day behaviour-log template
  • Free lifetime updates when we improve the guide

Grounded in research, not vibes

This guide draws directly on Tasha Eurich's self-awareness research, Daniel Kahneman's work on System 1/2 cognition, Michael Gazzaniga's split-brain experimental literature, Marcus Raichle's foundational papers on the default-mode network, Robert Kegan's adult-development theory, and Lisa Feldman Barrett's work on constructed emotion. Where we simplify, we say so. Every load-bearing claim is sourced.

FAQ

Will this guide make me feel bad about myself?
Generally the opposite. Most readers report feeling calmer afterwards, because the framework removes the moral weight from "having blindspots" (everyone does, by design) and replaces it with practical disciplines. The relief is in learning it's universal, not personal.

Is this for people with low self-awareness, or high?
Both. Counter-intuitively, people with the highest self-rated self-awareness often get more from this guide, because the gap between rated and actual self-awareness is largest in the over-confident group. That finding is also from Eurich's research.

How is this different from a therapy book?
Therapy is largely Layer 3 work (why you do things). This guide works Layers 1, 4, and 5 (what you actually did, how others received it, whether it's a pattern): the layers where introspection is least reliable and external mirrors do the most work. The two are complementary.

Is there a physical copy?
Not yet. It's PDF-only, which means instant delivery and no shipping.

I'm worried about my purchase showing up on a shared card statement.
The charge appears as PRIMERDECK. Discreet, no product name.

A blindspot never announces itself as a blindspot; it presents itself as being right. Every year it runs unmapped, it keeps compounding in the rooms that matter most. The map takes about 21 minutes.
