You would never let anyone else talk to you like this.

It starts before you're fully awake. I'm an idiot. I always do this. I should have known better. The voice never announces itself, it just speaks in the first person, and because it says I, you hand it the full authority of you. A stranger using those words would be shown the door. This voice gets a lifetime pass, because you're convinced it's you, being honest.

The cost compounds quietly: every decision second-guessed, every win discounted, every mistake replayed on a loop that kindness can't switch off. If you've tried the affirmations and the self-compassion books and found the voice unmoved, that isn't a failure of effort. It's the tell. You've been arguing with a recording, and arguing with a recording doesn't change what's on the tape.

The Inner Critic Primer does something different: it teaches you to read the label. Whose voice is this actually, in these exact words, in this exact tone? Once you can hear the critic as a recording and attribute it to its source, it loses the authority of you. Then the guide works on the layer underneath, the built-in negativity slant that gives any harsh voice its grip, so the recording has less to grab.

What's inside

  • The critic is a part, not the whole. What Internal Family Systems and Schema Therapy independently found about the harsh inner voice, and why that finding changes what you do next.
  • The five-minute exercise that surfaces the source. Three questions, asked in order, ending with does this remind you of anyone? Plus what it means if nothing comes up.
  • The five recordings most people are playing. The harshly critical parent, the cold one, the competitive sibling, the cultural voice, the earlier partner. A recording you can recognise is a recording you can attribute.
  • Why attribution works where kindness alone loses. Where self-compassion fits, and the order that holds: attribute first, then be kind. Reverse it and the deep critic wins.
  • The voice runs downhill. The documented "bad is stronger than good" asymmetry: the critic moves with the grain of your attention, any kind voice moves against it. A feature of the hardware, not a personal defect.
  • Working with the slant. Five daily disciplines, including daily attribution, the "what do I actually think" question, logging the good on purpose, reducing the live feed, and building the Healthy Adult.
  • When the honest answer is a professional. Three clear signals, stated plainly and read as routing rather than failure, plus which kinds of therapy are built for exactly this.

Who this is for

  • Anyone whose critic uses the same words, in the same tone, every single time.
  • People who've done the affirmations and the kind self-talk and watched the voice shrug them off.
  • Anyone who wants accuracy about themselves, not forced cheerfulness.

Who this is not for

  • If the voice traces back to abuse, severe neglect, or ongoing harm, self-directed work can reopen old scenes without support. The guide says so plainly: trauma-informed therapy is the right room, and it points you there.
  • If the critic is flattening your days, or there is any thought of harming yourself, that is past a primer's reach. See a clinician now; the guide's resource pages list where to start.

Grounded in research

The frameworks come from Internal Family Systems (Richard Schwartz) and Schema Therapy (Jeffrey Young); the negativity-bias finding from Baumeister and colleagues' "Bad Is Stronger Than Good" review; the self-compassion evidence from Kristin Neff's work and a published meta-analysis. Every load-bearing claim is sourced in the guide's closing pages, and where we couldn't find a clean study for a number, we say so rather than invent one.

FAQ

Is this just self-compassion again?
No. Self-compassion is real and the guide keeps it, but used alone against a deep critic, it usually loses. The core move here is different: attribute the voice to its source first, then be kind. That order is the whole point.

Is this about blaming my parents?
No. Attribution is a technical move, not an accusation. Most internalized critics come from people who were not trying to install anything. You're not deciding anyone was a villain, you're noticing whose fingerprints are on the voice, which is a different and far more useful thing.

Is there a physical copy?
Not yet. It's PDF-only, which means instant delivery and no shipping.

I'd rather this didn't show up by name on a shared card statement.

The recording has been playing for years, and every unexamined day gives it another rep. An afternoon spent learning whose voice it is costs you thirteen pages. Letting it keep the authority of you costs considerably more.
